Early Careers Residential Programme Case Study - Tarmac

Mount Cook offers in bespoke learning programmes to apprentices and graduates. Our residential programmes are a powerful tool to encourage growth, networking and develop crucial co-working skills that are easily transferable to the work place.

Tarmac CRH has been utilising Mount Cook for their Early Careers Core Skills Development Programme since 2019. The 2024 event was a huge success with an amazing cohort of learners. Here's a closer look...

Designing the programme

Learning outcomes were based on the Tarmac Framework and CRH Values which underpinned all elements of the programme; How I’m Motivated, How I Learn, How I Think and Adapt and How I Work With Others and the Values: People, Character, Performance and Innovation.

Mount Cook meet with Tarmac several time throughout the year to fine tune the content and hear more about the cohort they will be working with, as well as any particular points to focus on throughout the learning.

The early careers residential programme in action

Participants arrived from all corners of the UK with great energy and commitment to the programme from the outset. Tarmac’s Early Careers team were fully on board every step of the way, supporting facilitation throughout to ensure its impact on all learners.

Working in 5 groups of 6, roles were allocated to all participants as would be reflected in the workplace. This immediately held each individual to account and created a new dynamic on which to explore and review.

Each task was carefully designed to enable participants to demonstrate their motivation, challenge themselves, work effectively with others and deal with multi-faceted scenarios requiring planning and problem solving.

The programme is elevated by excellent facilitation before and after each task, providing very thought-provoking developmental models to which participants can refer to during the tasks and back in the workplace. Reviews really challenged participants to explore both their team approach but also their individual contributions and the affect they may have on others and the task in hand.

They explored energy and mindset and how this may change in given situations and over time and the impact that it can have on the individual, the team and the organisation and what measures they can take to remain in the “right zone”.

Reflecting on the learning

Peer feedback was shared and gathered within teams which helped participants to formulate their own goals for their return to work.  This is followed up by Mount Cook.

Wider feedback was shared from all angles, Tarmac staff and Mount Cook tutors giving participants a plethora of information on which to ponder on their trips back home to recover after a very busy trip.

Tarmac invest greatly in their Early Careers programmes and this is very much reflected the quality of the apprentices and graduates in attendance at this programme.

They are ready and eager to learn, fully engage and challenge themselves throughout and expect feedback at all stages. It’s a joy to see how this is embraced and can be seen through the quality of the feedback and action plans presented at the end of the programme - Lesley Turner, Mount Cook Training & Development Manager

Growth and development are at the heart of this programme and Tarmac and Mount Cook proactively invest time and energy into every single participant at the event.

Delicious homemade food, cosy campfires with games really raised the overall mood of the event and created the perfect environment for learning and growth.
