We are looking for active people to embark on their career in the outdoors with us! We are recruiting IOL Level 3 Apprentice Activity Instructor to join our team for the start of 2024.

 CAREER PROGRESSION 
This apprenticeship is the perfect first step towards a wide range of careers in the outdoors. Possible future opportunities could include: specialist outdoor instructor, environmental educator, outdoor therapist, forest school leader, outdoor centre manager or overseas expedition leader.

​You will also build a variety of transferable life skills that make you a desirable employee across many sectors. Build confidence, improve public speaking, learn to work with diverse groups, work to high safety standards, and broaden your horizons.

The most valuable thing I have gained from Mount Cook is confidence! I have a voice now, both with groups and colleagues. This has translated into my personal life as well as meaning I can be a lot more friendly and talkative now.

 WHAT DOES THE JOB ROLE LOOK LIKE? 
The apprenticeship spans two summer seasons, at the end of which you will be qualified level 3 instructor, skilled at delivering activities to a wide variety of groups.

You will help supervise and guide children and adults in activities such as, rock climbing, hillwalking, archery, bush craft, team challenges and ropes courses at an introductory level. You will be supervised while working primarily at Mount Cook, and in a range of weather conditions, following tightly defined operating procedures.
YEAR 1
You will build your portfolio based around on and off the job training.

Learn to prepare, deliver and complete sessions of onsite activities like bush craft, high ropes, archery and orienteering.

Complete emergency outdoor first aid.

Gain entry level qualifications like Archery GB and do your HML and RCI training.
Pay: £6.40 per hour
YEAR 2
You will have the opportunity to expand your NGB qualifications based on your own areas of interest, such as; ERCA High ropes , IOL Bush craft and HML/RCI assessments.

Successfully deliver sessions to a wide range of groups. 

You will do your end point assessment.
Pay: £11.44 per hour

 WHAT IS THE APPRENTICESHIP CONTENT? 
You will have a tutor who you will meet monthly for theory sessions and course content.

End point assessment that will take place a minimum of 13 months after you start (usually month 13 - 15)

The end point assessment will include a professional discussion with external examiner and an observation of a session delivery, with a written lesson plan.

Portfolio of learning will be kept throughout learning.


 
 THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS ROLE 
No prior qualifications are required at point of employment, but the ideal candidate will have the following traits:
 
  • Positive "can-do" attitude with all colleagues and customers come rain or shine
  • Enthusiasm for the outdoors and outdoor pursuits
  • Punctual, diligent, and committed to the role
  • Shares the Mount Cook values: Exceeding Expectations, Professional Throughout, Everyone Valued 
Applicants must be over 18 or will turn 18 during first year of apprenticeship.
Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK.
Role is subject to a DBS check.
Candidates will need to complete Level 2 English and Maths prior to taking the end point assessment, or evidence that they have already completed an equivalent qualification.
